Without an ink signature on the credit card purchase, the merchant
has no recourse if customers claim not to have made the purchase
Methods
Address
Verification System (AVS)
if
you are going to actually ship something out to your customer, AVS allows you to make sure
that the person ordering, is REALLY the card holder and you will state that you "only
ship to the billing address". Avoids "charge backs" to your account
by your bank. Too many charge backs put you in the "high risk"
category.
Authentication engine to
verify identity
Atlanta-based Equifax, one of the "big three'' credit
reporting agencies, has signed a deal with Checkfree to use its authentication engine to
verify identity.
After a potential Checkfree customer enters a name, address, birth
date and Social Security number, Checkfree sends that information to
Equifax, which uses
it to pull up the person's credit report. Then Equifax sends back a set of multiple-choice
questions, such as which bank financed the person's car loan, and how much their mortgage
payment is.
Equifax says this is a secure way to quickly identify a person,
rather than Checkfree's old way that requires the company to send a potential customer a
key number back in the "world'' through the mail.
